National Grid Hoardings, Yeading

Over the half term National Grid commisioned Cancontrol to work alongside local kids from Yeading. The brief was to create a mural that will cover a set of hoardings that surrounds a work site. The site is based in the centre of a local park where holes 60 feet deep are being dug for new piping , there is also a lot of large dangerous machinery. There are a many young people in the area so it was important to get the message across that the site is strictly out of bounds.

Battling against rain and cold weather conditions everyone got stuck in and worked well as a team to produce a 30 metre long mural. The painting has three large beever characters as workmen with cracks in the wall revealing the worksite behind the hoardings. Various warning signs were also painted to enhance the dangers the site posed.

Kings Cross Neighbourhood Centre

Our team have just completed our longest workshop under taken so far in London. Shafiq Rahman of KCB asked us to deliver a 45 hour workshop session over 5 weeks. Shafiq expressed to us that he had difficulty engaging the young people of KCB in any activities and a lot of them are becoming out of control.
Over the time period everyone involved showed dedication and created some amazing canvases, t-shirts and caps, with some taking part in a final mural that now covers the entire front of the building. Shafiq was so happy with the result he invited the local paper to come down and report on this success story. He is now calling for Camden Council to fund the project in youth clubs across the borough.

Mural Project, Fulham Court

image

We have been working alongside Hammersmith council over the last month, delivering workshops to different centres around the borough. The latest centre, Fulham Court was a real challenge, they have had constant difficulties in their sports court with graffiti for a long time. Our brief was to produce a mural in a day that would cover the main wall which was 40 metres long! After some discussions with the young residents of the estate we decided to produce 4 large sports players that were spread evenly, across the space with stars running through the background. The idea of involving the young people of the estate, will help give them some pride in the mural and will encourage them to deter others from tagging the court.

Concorde Centre, Homerton

We were back to Homerton last week, where we spent the afternoon painting a mural on the back wall of the club. The group who contributed were between the age of 11 to 14. The clubs name was painted in large letters with characters Bugs Bunny and Tweetie Pie placed either side.

“WOW” mural, Regents Park

This mural was painted in the ground floor of a 6 storey house over looking Regents Park in London. The room will be eventually turned into a gymnasium that leads through to a massive indoor swimming pool. The house had recently been bought by Michael and Xochi Birch who invented the social media network http://www.bebo.com. I wanted this painting to have a lot of energy and impact to enhance the overall “up tempo “feel of a gym.
